Excerpts from students' memoirs (Me, Myself and I)

When I was three, I thought it would be nice to drive, so I grabbed the shiny keys and went out to my dad’s old truck and got in the front seat. But, of course I couldn’t figure out how to put the keys in the ignition, so I decided to try hotwiring it like they did in the movies. I couldn’t get to the wires so I walked back inside and got my grandpa’s keys and had the same problem. I went back inside and said “why sixteen?”
Ever since then, I’ve been the jokester of the family.

I was in fourth grade when I discovered books, I know – fourth grade. The first book I read and really actually liked was twilight. I read the first chapter and was hooked. All I wanted to do was read. Once I stayed up all night and read. I went to school at noon the next day. So now I’m an insane reader, and I’m never going to stop reading.
Olivia - 5th grade

It was a normal day, and I was with my mom in the bookstore looking for a book. I had just finished ‘Long Shadows’ and couldn’t find anything in the house that I live in that was interesting. So here we are in the bookstore looking for a book with the right words - something that would catch my attention, and draw me in.

Then my eyes scanned across ‘Maximum Ride’. I picked it up and brought it home (paid for it of course) and fell in a deep trance with my book.

About two days later I finished the wonderful piece and imagined Max, the girl with wings traveling the world, fighting, smashing, and beating up bad guys. While my imagination runs wild, in about a week I finish the entire series. But… I have never, ever stopped imagining what it would be like to have wings.
Stephen - 6th grade

One week before Halloween, Olivia was sitting on her kitchen floor carving her pumpkin while her dog, Mink, watched. I wanted to help, so after we picked all of the disgusting orange guts out; I got her pumpkin scraper and scraped it out for about thirty minutes. When I was finished, I had scraped almost an inch out of the pumpkin. I called it proudly “My work of art”. When I got my own pumpkin I didn’t scrape as much out of it. This is because I was so tired since I had put so much energy into Olivia’s pumpkin.

I really enjoyed working on that pumpkin, even though it was not mine.
Rachel - 5th grade
